Last week, Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed Senate Bill 956, Protecting State Waters from PFAS Pollution Act. The bill requires the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) to:
- Identify significant industrial users of PFAS by October 1, 2024
- Develop certain PFAS monitoring and testing criteria for significant industrial users by January 1, 2025
- Develop PFAS action levels for addressing contamination from industrial discharge for pretreatment permits by June 1, 2025, and
- Develop certain mitigation plans by September 1, 2025, among other actions.
MDE will also need to update its PFAS Action Plan with an evaluation of PFAS disposal methods and the progress made on this bill’s requirements. The bill takes effect July 1.
